6 ski resorts for a quirky Christmas

Categories Featured Posts, Our Top Tips

Christmas in the mountains is sure to be magical, and our resorts are full of authentic celebrations and wacky traditions to get everyone in a festive mood. Whether you’re heading off as a couple, group or family, here are six resorts that guarantee a December to remember.

Kitzbühel, Austria

An incredible spectacle for all, Kitzbühel sets up a real-life advent calendar at the tourist info point. A new window is opened every day, and it’s so big that visitors can walk through the window to get a peek at what’s inside. After that, you can explore a winter wonderland with 40 beautifully decorated trees and thousands of glittering ornaments, plus biscuits, mulled wine and regional delicacies to try.

Kronplatz, Italy

The courtyard of the Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor in Kronplatz is transformed into a medieval wonderland, with a torchlight show, medieval stories composed of sand drawing, music and complimentary entry to the museum. A truly spectacular way to celebrate the season.

Ruka, Finland

In December, for two nights only, head down to the Ruka outdoor stadium to watch the Christmas Bird Musical light up the resort and spread festive cheer. If you’re with the little ones, there’ll also be chances to meet Santa and his reindeer when they make their annual visit to Ruka Village.

La Massana, Andorra

The night before Christmas holds a lot of religious significance in La Massana. Head to the Catholic church in the early evening for English carol singing, hot wine and mince pies. And if you can stay awake until midnight, the Church of Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria also holds a traditional midnight mass from 11pm.

Dia de los Reis (King’s Day) usually takes place in early January and is celebrated with a Three Kings Parade, starting from the Prat Gran del Colat. The Three Kings even hand around presents.

Zell am See, Austria

On December 25th, a Christmas tree is submerged 15 metres deep into the lake in Zell am See. Accompanied by festive music, the Christmas tree is rescued by divers and brought back to the shore.

A few days after that, you can watch the Tresterer, symbolic Austrian figures, welcome in the new year. They wear golden crowns and entertain guests with traditional dances.

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Between Christmas Day and New Year in Kranjska Gora, make sure you go to the Mlačca Gorge in Mojstrana, where they put on a very special adaptation of the Nativity story. The actors wear crampons and, instead of a barn, Christ’s Child is surrounded by frozen waterfalls. After the show, take a walk through the Icy Kingdom of the Snow Queen – a crystal hall with frozen waterfalls – to see another smaller Nativity on the other side. It’s truly a magical experience.
